Thank God we are safe and sound this morning. Around 7:30 pm last night, the thunderstorms started rolling in. With an eye on the tv, I noticed that a tornado warning had been issued for Elbert County. I called my mom, who advised me to take Lucy and go into the bathroom until it was over. As I was gathering up my cell phone, a sleeping bag and our shoes, the tornado sirens began blaring. We made a mad dash for the bathroom and as soon as we got in there and closed the door, our power went off. Lucy and I huddled in the bathroom in the dark wrapped in a sleeping bag while listening to hail hitting the roof and roaring of the wind (yes, it sounded like a train) for about 20 minutes. I don't think I have ever been so scared in my life, but I tried not to show it as I knew that Lucy was probably terrified. She was very brave for a 4 year old though!
When the storm passed, a neighbor came by to check on us and informed me that a tree had fallen on some power lines right in front of her house and lightning had hit a transformer there as well. That explained the power outage. I put in a call to our utility company and the guys showed up about 30 minutes later to begin cutting the tree off the lines. It was 2 am before power was restored.
I woke up this morning to a small water stain on my kitchen ceiling. I guess the wind or hail might have damaged the roof. But other than that, everyone is safe and sound. Definitely not my idea of a fun Friday night!
